# PA SET Explorer — complete user manual This is the official user manual of PA SET Explorer, version 1.4.1 (updated 2026-10-18). Source: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials Words in **bold** are the exact names of buttons, menus and options as they appear in the program (the program interface is in English). Key combinations are written like `Ctrl+Z`. Each screenshot is followed by the meaning of its numbered marks. ## Contents - Getting started — What PA SET Explorer is, what it can do for you, which keyboards and files it understands, and a guided tour of the main window. - Open a SET & Resources — The two buttons at the top that start everything: Open SET/KST to load a KORG SET or PA5X KST, and Resources — your personal library of SETs, KSTs, AKX sets, styles and Community downloads. - Sound Library — The list of every sound and drum kit in your SET: what each column means, how to listen, how to inspect a sound key by key, and how to export or delete it. - PCM Banks — Every sample stored in the RAM banks of your SET: filter, search, listen, see the waveform, export WAV, compress to save memory and remove duplicate samples. - Oscillators — How the selected sound is built: its oscillators (layers), their key and velocity ranges, octave, transpose and tune, and which multisample each one plays. - Samples — The samples used by the sound you selected: one row per sample with its root note, bank, format and rate — play them one by one and export them as WAV. - Converter — Convert one style between KORG Pa (.STY), KORG PA5X (.stg), Yamaha, Medeli AKX, Ketron and MIDI — with section mapping, previews, warnings, a fidelity check and per-track settings. Plus a look at the Sampler Converter that is coming soon. - SetManager — The heart of PA SET Explorer: your SET laid out bank by bank and page by page like on the keyboard, a second SET next to it, and every tool to build, convert and clean SETs — Import/Merge, Create New Set, Convert, Medeli AKX, Copy Options and Check Unused. - Combining SETs — Drag & drop between two SETs: single styles, groups, whole pages and banks, sounds and drum kits, pads — between KORG SETs, PA5X KSTs and Medeli AKX sets — and what is copied along. - Importing styles, samples & drum kits — Bring files from anywhere into your SET: styles from KORG, PA5X, Yamaha, Medeli and Ketron (converted automatically), and samplers or drum kits from SoundFont, Medeli, Yamaha and KORG Triton/Kronos files — into KORG SETs and Medeli AKX sets. - Style Properties — Open any KORG style and see — and change — how it is built: the sound of every track, expression, keyboard ranges, the STS, the pads, plus Export Style, Generate Report and the Event Editor. - Saving & Undo — How PA SET Explorer protects your SET: every change goes to a working copy and into a list. Undo and redo any step, review everything in the Save window, and write it to your SET only when you are happy. - Medeli AKX / Zen — Create and load Medeli AKX/Zen sets, organise them in packs, import voices, kits and styles, edit voices layer by layer, edit styles and Quick Settings, and convert KORG SETs and KSTs into AKX — or AKX sets back into KORG. - Style Players — Listen to styles with their real sounds. The KORG Style Player plays KORG styles with their samplers (and on your KORG keyboard over MIDI); the universal Style Player plays KORG, PA5X, Yamaha, Medeli and Ketron styles and lets you change samplers, volumes, octaves, chord rules and notes. - Settings, Profile & more — Audio Options (theme, output device, MIDI and Bluetooth input, engine, mixer, EQ, compressor), your Profile and license, Bug Report, the Style Database, Community Resources and the language. - Questions & Answers - Glossary --- # Getting started What PA SET Explorer is, what it can do for you, which keyboards and files it understands, and a guided tour of the main window. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=getting-started In this chapter: - What the program does — in one minute - Which KORG, Medeli, Yamaha and Ketron files it works with - What happens the first time you open it - The name and job of every part of the window - What Basic and Premium mean ## What is PA SET Explorer? PA SET Explorer is a Windows program that lets you **open, explore, combine and convert** the SETs of KORG Pa arranger keyboards — and of the Medeli AKX / Zen expansions — on your computer, without the keyboard. A KORG **SET** is the folder your keyboard saves to a USB stick: it holds your styles, sounds, samples, pads and performances. Normally you can only see what is inside on the keyboard itself, one screen at a time. PA SET Explorer shows you **everything at once**, lets you **listen** to it on your PC, and lets you **move things between SETs** with your mouse. Think of it as a file manager made for musicians: you open your SET, you see every style and every sound, you drag what you want from another SET, you press **Save** and you copy the SET back to the keyboard. > **Your files are safe:** When you open a SET, the program works on a **copy** of it. Nothing you do touches your real SET until you press **Save** — and you can undo every step with `Ctrl+Z`. Read [Saving & Undo](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving) to see how it works. ## What you can do with it - **Explore every sound** — See all the sounds, drum kits, PCM samples and oscillators of a SET, and play them with your mouse or your computer keyboard. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library)) - **Export sounds** — Save any sound as SoundFont .sf2, Medeli .voi / .kit, a KORG sampler (.PCM + RAM.KMP + .PCG) or WAV files. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library#export-sound)) - **Combine two SETs** — Open a second SET next to yours and drag styles, sounds, samplers, drum kits and pads across. Samples travel with the styles. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets)) - **Convert styles** — Turn one style into any other format: KORG .STY, PA5X .stg, Yamaha, Medeli, Ketron or MIDI. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter)) - **Convert a whole SET** — KORG SET → PA5X KST, PA5X KST → older KORG, or a whole SET into Medeli AKX, Yamaha or Ketron in one go. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#btn-convert)) - **Medeli AKX / Zen** — Create and load AKX sets, build packs, import voices, kits and styles, edit them, and convert a KORG SET into AKX. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx)) - **Play & edit styles** — Listen to any style in the Style Players, change samplers, volumes, octaves and chord rules, and edit notes. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=style-players)) - **Save & undo** — Every change waits in a list until you press Save. Undo with Ctrl+Z, redo with Ctrl+Y. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving)) - **Resources & Community** — Keep a library of your SETs and styles, and get styles, samples and drum kits shared by other musicians. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources#resources)) ## Supported keyboards and files PA SET Explorer works with the whole KORG Pa family that uses SET folders, plus the PA5X with its new KST format. When you open a SET it asks which keyboard it is for, because each model has a different amount of sample memory: | Keyboard | What you open | Sample memory | Compression | Styles per bank | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | KORG PA300 | a `.SET` folder | 32 MB | No | 40 (5 pages × 8) | | KORG PA600 | a `.SET` folder | 96 MB | No | 40 (5 pages × 8) | | KORG PA900 | a `.SET` folder | 192 MB | No | 40 (5 pages × 8) | | KORG PA3X | a `.SET` folder | 128 MB | Yes | 40 (5 pages × 8) | | KORG PA700 | a `.SET` folder | 128 MB | Yes | 48 (6 pages × 8) | | KORG PA1000 | a `.SET` folder | 600 MB | Yes | 48 (6 pages × 8) | | KORG PA4X | a `.SET` folder | 1.5 GB | Yes | 48 (6 pages × 8) | | KORG PA5X | a `.KST` folder | 2.5 GB | Yes | folders of `.stg` styles (10 per page) | | Medeli AKX / Zen | an AKX set folder (with a `.GSTarget` file) | 256 MB or 768 MB | — | packs of styles | *“Compression” means the keyboard can store samples compressed, so more of them fit in memory.* ### File types you will meet | File | What it is | Where you use it | | --- | --- | --- | | `.SET` folder | A complete KORG SET (PA300 – PA4X) | [Open SET/KST](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources#open-set), SetManager | | `.KST` folder | A complete KORG PA5X SET | Open SET/KST, SetManager | | `.STY` | A KORG style bank (many styles in one file) | SetManager, Converter, Style Player | | `.stg` | One KORG PA5X style | SetManager, Converter, Style Player | | `.PCG` · `.PCM` · `RAM.KMP` | KORG sounds · samples · multisamples (inside a SET) | Sound Library, PCM Banks | | `.sty` (Yamaha) | A Yamaha style (SFF) | Converter, Import Style, Style Player | | `.sty` (Medeli) | A Medeli AKX style | Converter, AKX sets, Style Player | | `.kst` (Ketron) | A Ketron / Audya style | Converter, Import Style, Style Player | | `.mid` | A MIDI file with style section markers | Converter, Import Style | | `.sf2` | SoundFont: samples + key zones | Import Sampler / DrumKit, Export | | `.voi` · `.kit` | Medeli voice · Medeli drum kit | AKX sets, Import, Export | | `.uvn` · `.uvd` | Yamaha voice · Yamaha drum kit | Import Sampler / DrumKit, AKX packs | | `.kmp` + `.ksf` | KORG Triton / Kronos / Nautilus multisample | Import Sampler, AKX Samples packs | ## The first time you open the program **Step 1 — Choose your language** The very first time, the program asks for the language of its menus. Pick one and press **Continue**. You can change it later with the globe button at the top. ![Select Language appears automatically on the first start.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/select-language.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. The list of languages. English and Español are complete. 2. Press **Continue** to confirm. **Step 2 — Read the Beta notice** PA SET Explorer is in active development. A short notice reminds you to **keep backup copies** of your SETs. Press **I understand**. **Step 3 — Activate your license (if asked)** If this computer has no license yet, enter your license key. You find it in your profile on the website. A trial license also works. **Step 4 — Open a SET and choose the keyboard model** Press **Open SET/KST** and pick your SET folder (see [Open SET/KST](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources#open-set)). When it has loaded, the program asks **which keyboard the SET is for**. Choose your model — this sets the memory bar and decides whether sample compression is offered. A PA5X KST is recognised automatically. ![Select Korg Model — the choice is shown at the top of the window afterwards.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/select-model.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Every supported model with its sample memory and whether it can compress samples. 2. Click your keyboard, for example **PA4X**. 3. **Skip** if you only want to look around — you can still explore the SET. > **Tip:** Choose the keyboard the SET will be **played on**, not where it came from. A SET from a PA4X that you want to load on a PA1000 should be opened as PA1000, so the memory bar warns you if it is too big. ## A tour of the main window This is the program with a real PA4X SET (“Stefan v2 2021”) loaded. Learn these 12 parts once and you will find your way everywhere: ![The main window of PA SET Explorer 1.4.1 with a PA4X SET loaded.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/ui-tour.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Program name** and, under it, the name of the SET you have open. 2. **Memory bar** — the keyboard model, how much sample memory the SET uses, how much is still free and the limit. It turns orange above 70% and red above 90%. 3. **Status** — “Ready”, “Loading…” or the name of the SET that was loaded. 4. **SET A / SET B view** — when two SETs are open in SetManager, choose which one the Sounds, PCM, Samples and Oscillators sections show. 5. **Language** of the menus. 6. **Resources** — your library of SETs, KSTs, AKX sets and styles, plus your Community downloads. 7. **Open SET/KST** — open a KORG SET or PA5X KST folder. This is where you start. 8. **Stop** — silences every sound that is playing. 9. **Sidebar** — the sections of the program. Click one to switch. 10. **Main area** — the content of the section you chose (here: the Sound Library). 11. **Keyboard** — click the keys to play the selected sound. 12. **Status bar** — a summary of the SET: sounds, PCM samples, styles, performances and pads. ### The sidebar sections | Section | What it is for | | --- | --- | | Sounds | The **Sound Library**: every sound and drum kit of the SET. A **Trial** gives you Premium for a few days. > **What you see on Basic:** Premium buttons show a small padlock. Clicking one opens a notice — “Your current plan is Basic” — with **Got it** and **View plans**. You can upgrade from Basic to Premium at any time on the [Plans page](https://www.pasetexplorer.com/plans.php); you only pay the difference. Your current plan is shown in [Profile](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=settings-and-more#profile) inside the program. --- # Open a SET & Resources The two buttons at the top that start everything: Open SET/KST to load a KORG SET or PA5X KST, and Resources — your personal library of SETs, KSTs, AKX sets, styles and Community downloads. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources In this chapter: - How to open a KORG .SET or PA5X .KST folder (three ways) - What happens while a SET loads - How to use the Resources library: Favorites, All, Community, Browse - How to open a second SET or a Medeli AKX set next to the first (Import/Merge) ## Open SET/KST — load your SET Everything starts by opening a SET. In PA SET Explorer you always open the **folder** of the SET (the folder whose name ends in `.SET` or `.KST`), not a single file inside it. **Step 1 — Copy the SET from your USB stick to the PC** On your keyboard, save your SET to a USB stick. Copy the whole folder — for example `MySET.SET` (PA300 – PA4X) or `MySET.KST` (PA5X) — to your computer, e.g. to the Desktop. > **Tip:** Always keep an untouched copy of the original SET somewhere safe. It costs nothing and saves you from any surprise. **Step 2 — Click Open SET/KST** Press **Open SET/KST** at the top right. A folder window opens. ![The Open SET/KST button in the header.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/ui-tour.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Open SET/KST** — click it to choose a SET folder. **Step 3 — Select the SET folder** Go to the folder that ends in `.SET` or `.KST`, click it once, and confirm. Do **not** open it — just select it. **Step 4 — Wait for the loading window** A **Loading SET** window shows the progress, the file being read and a log. The first step is “Preparing the working copy”: the program copies your SET to a safe working area so that nothing you do touches the original until you press Save. **Step 5 — Choose the keyboard model** Pick the keyboard the SET is for (see [Getting started](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=getting-started#first-launch)). A PA5X KST is recognised by itself and skips this step. ![Screenshot](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/select-model.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. All supported models with their sample memory. 2. Click your keyboard. 3. Or **Skip**. > **Your SET is open:** The SET name appears under the program name, the memory bar shows how full the SET is, the sidebar shows how many sounds and PCM samples it has, and the status bar at the bottom gives a summary (sounds, PCM, styles, performances, pads). The SET is also added automatically to **Resources → All** so you can reopen it with a double-click next time. ### Three ways to open a SET | Way | How | | --- | --- | | Button | **Open SET/KST** → select the `.SET` / `.KST` folder. | | Drag & drop | Drag the SET folder from Windows Explorer and drop it **anywhere on the program window**. The window shows “Drop a KORG .SET / .KST folder to open it”. If a SET is already open, you are asked “Replace loaded SET?”. | | Resources | Double-click the SET in Resources → All or Favorites. | > **If you already have changes:** Opening another SET replaces SET A. If SET A has unsaved changes, the program first asks “Save the changes to SET A first?” with **Save**, **Don’t save** and **Cancel**. See [Saving & Undo](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving). **Tips:** - A SET folder normally contains sub-folders such as `SOUND`, `STYLE`, `PCM`, `PAD`, `PERFORM`, `GLOBAL` and `MULTISMP`. If you see them, you are one level too deep — go back and select their parent folder. - Dropping a single style file on the window does not open it: drop styles into **Resources** instead (the program reminds you with a message). - Dropping a Medeli AKX/Zen folder on the window opens it in SetManager as an AKX set. ## Resources — your library **Resources** opens your personal library: every SET, KST, AKX set and style you have opened or added, in one place. Only the **location** of each item is saved — nothing is copied or moved. ![Resources → All with KORG SETs, PA5X KSTs, an AKX set and KORG, Yamaha and Medeli styles.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/resources-all.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Favorites**, **All**, **Community** and **Browse** — with how many items each one has. 2. Every item is a card with its type (SET, KST, STY, SFF, MSF, STG, AKX) and its name. 3. The full type: Korg SET, Korg KST, Korg Style, Yamaha Style, Medeli Style, PA5X Style, Ketron Style or AKX/Zen Expansion. 4. **Star** — add to / remove from Favorites. 5. **✕** — remove from the library. The files on disk are **not** touched. 6. Reminder: double-click a SET/KST to open it, right-click an AKX/Zen folder to load it. 7. **Open Folder** — opens the Resources folder (your Community downloads) in Windows. ### What a double-click does | Item | Double-click | Right-click | | --- | --- | --- | | KORG SET / KST | Opens it as SET A (you are asked first; the open SET is closed). | — | | Any style (KORG, PA5X, Yamaha, Medeli, Ketron) | Opens it in the [Style Player](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=style-players#universal-player). | ▶ Open in the Style Player · Open in SetManager (MIDI) for KORG .STY / .stg | | AKX/Zen set | Loads it like **Load AKX/Zen Set**. | Load AKX/Zen Set | ![Right-click menu of a style in Resources.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/resources-context.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. A Yamaha style. 2. Right-click → **▶ Open in the Style Player**. ## Resources → Community: your downloads Everything you download from the PA SET Explorer **Community** website (styles, samples and drum kits shared by other musicians) appears here, sorted by brand and type. ![Resources → Community with 40 downloads.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/resources-community.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Show **All**, **Styles**, **Samples** or **Drumkits**. 2. Show only **KORG**, **Medeli** or **Yamaha** files. 3. Search by name. 4. Open the Community downloads folder. 5. A downloaded resource: name, brand and kind, file type and size. 6. **⇄ Open in the Converter** (styles) — convert it to another format. 7. **📂 Show in folder**. 8. A Medeli voice (.voi) downloaded from the Community. Double-click a style to listen to it in the Style Player. Double-click a sample or a drum kit to open its folder. To put a Community style straight into a SET, use **Import Style → From Community** on an empty slot (see [Importing](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=importing#import-styles)). > **Getting Community resources:** Click **Community Resources** in the sidebar: the Community page opens in your browser. When you choose “Get it” on the website, the program asks for which instrument you want it (KORG PA300 – PA4X, KORG PA5X, Medeli AKX, Yamaha or Ketron) and saves the file — already converted — into this list. ## Resources → Browse: add things to the library ![Resources → Browse.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/resources-browse.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Drag & drop here** — KORG .SET/.KST folders, AKX/Zen folders (with a .GSTarget) and style files. 2. **Add Folder…** — pick a SET, KST or AKX folder. 3. **Add Style Files…** — pick one or more style files (.STY, .sty, .stg, .kst). 4. Items added here go to **All**. Items dropped on **Favorites** are marked as favorites. **Tips:** - Use Resources as your “style shelf”: add the styles you like from anywhere on your PC, then double-click to listen or import them into a SET with **Import Style → From Resources**. - If a card says the item “no longer exists at its saved location”, you moved or deleted it in Windows. Remove the card with ✕ and add it again from its new place. - Press `Esc` or click outside to close Resources. ## Two SETs at once: Import/Merge To copy things **between** SETs you need two of them open. That is what **Import/Merge** in **SetManager** is for: ![Import / Merge — what do you want to import?](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-import-merge.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **KORG SET / KST** — load a second KORG SET or a PA5X KST as **SET B**, next to your SET A. 2. **Medeli AKX / Zen expansion** — open a Medeli AKX/Zen set next to your KORG SET (or next to another AKX set). **SET A (left, cyan)** - Your **main** SET — the one you edit and save. - Everything you drag lands here. - Has the working copy with Undo, Redo and Save. **SET B (right, orange)** - The **source** SET you take things from. - Drag its styles, sounds and pads onto SET A. - Loaded with Import/Merge. The full story — drag & drop, groups, pages, banks, KST rules and Medeli AKX — is in [Combining SETs](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets). > **Premium:** **Import/Merge** is a **Premium** feature. --- # Sound Library The list of every sound and drum kit in your SET: what each column means, how to listen, how to inspect a sound key by key, and how to export or delete it. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library In this chapter: - What every column of the list means - Three ways to listen: Demo, mouse and computer keyboard - The right-click menu: Play, Export, Details, Delete - Exporting a sound as .sf2, .voi/.kit, KORG sampler or WAV - Reading the Sound Details window like a pro ## The Sound Library at a glance Click **Sounds** in the sidebar. You see one row per sound of the SET — both normal sounds (samplers) and drum kits. Click a row to **select** it: the sound becomes the “current sound” for the keyboard, the [Samples](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=samples) section and the [Oscillators](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=oscillators) section. ![Sound Library with a PA4X SET: 67 sounds. “E.Vioara Soft” is selected.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sounds-library.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. How many sounds the SET has. 2. **Search sounds…** — type part of a name to filter the list instantly. 3. **All Types / Sounds Only / Drum Kits Only** — show only one kind. 4. A **selected** row (highlighted). Click any row to select it. 5. **Type** — “Sound” for a normal sound, “Drum Kit” for a drum kit. 6. **Where the samples live** — RAM, Factory ROM, Mixed or Unknown (see the table below). 7. **Number of oscillators** (layers) the sound uses. 8. **Format version** of the sound (for example 2.0, 3.0, 5.0) — newer keyboards use newer versions. 9. **▶ Demo** — plays a short phrase with this sound (drum kits play a groove). 10. Reminder: your **computer keyboard** plays the selected sound. 11. The **on-screen keyboard** — click a key to play the selected sound. ### What the samples badge means | Badge | Meaning | What it tells you | | --- | --- | --- | | RAM | All samples of the sound are inside the SET (PCM banks). | The sound is **portable**: it travels with the SET to any compatible keyboard. | | Factory ROM | The sound uses the keyboard’s **built-in** samples, not samples from the SET. | It only sounds right on a keyboard that has those factory samples. | | Mixed | Some oscillators use RAM samples, others factory ROM samples. | Partly portable. | | Unknown | The type could not be read from the bank. | Drum kits always show Unknown here — open **Details** to see each key. | ## Three ways to listen 1. **▶ Demo** on any row — plays a short phrase chosen for the sound (bass, guitar, accordion…). A drum kit plays a short groove. It does not change your selection. 2. **The on-screen keyboard** — click a key. Where you click matters: the **top of a key plays soft**, the **bottom plays loud** (the note and velocity appear next to the keyboard title). Keys that the sound does not use are dimmed. 3. **Your computer keyboard** — with a sound selected (and no text box active), your PC keys become piano keys: | Keys | Action | | --- | --- | | `A S D F G H J K L ;` | White keys from **C4** to **E5** | | `W E T Y U O P` | Black keys (sharps) of that octave | | `Z X C V B N M` | White keys of the **low octave** (C3 – B3) | | `Shift` | Hold it: everything plays **one octave higher** | | `Ctrl` | Hold it: everything plays **one octave lower** | | `Stop` | The **Stop** button (top right) silences everything | > **Tip:** Hold a key down to hear the sustain and loop of the sample. To hear one layer only, go to [Oscillators](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=oscillators) and untick the other oscillators — the keyboard then plays only the ticked ones. ## The right-click menu Right-click any sound to open its menu. The sound is selected at the same time. ![Right-click menu of a sound.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sounds-context.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Play Sound** — plays middle C (C4) once. 2. **Export** — save the sound as SF2, VOI/KIT, KORG sampler or WAV. 3. **Details** — opens the Sound Details window (zones, parameters, effects). 4. **Delete Sound** — removes the sound (and, if you want, its samples). ## Export a sound Choose **Export** in the right-click menu. Pick one of four formats: ![The Export sound window.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sound-export.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Export as SF2** — one SoundFont file (.sf2) with every sample and key zone. Opens in almost any sampler or DAW. 2. **Export as VOI** — a Medeli voice (.voi). For a drum kit this button reads **Export as KIT** (.kit). 3. **Export as Korg Sampler** — a mini KORG SET with the sound, its multisample and its samples (.PCG + RAM.KMP + .PCM). 4. **Export Wave Sounds** — every sample as a separate WAV file, named after its root note (C4.wav, D#4.wav…). | Option | You choose | You get | | --- | --- | --- | | Export as SF2 | where to save the file | `.sf2` | | Export as VOI / KIT | a folder | one or more `.voi` (or `.kit`) files | | Export as Korg Sampler | the **sampler version**, then a folder | a folder `.SET` with `MULTISMP/RAM.KMP`, `SOUND/USER01.PCG` (or `USERDK01.PCG` for drum kits) and `PCM/RAM01.PCM` | | Export Wave Sounds | a folder | one 16-bit WAV per sample | ### Sampler version 2.1 or 3.0? **Export as Korg Sampler** asks for the sampler version, because older and newer keyboards store multisamples differently: **Sampler Version 2.1** - PA600, PA500 and older models - The only choice when the source sound is v2.1 **Sampler Version 3.0** - PA700, PA4X, PA1000 and newer models - Available when the source sound is v3.0 > **Note:** **Export as Korg Sampler** needs RAM samples. If the sound uses only factory ROM samples the button is disabled, with the hint “Uses factory ROM samples — Korg Sampler export needs RAM samples.” > **Premium:** Exporting sounds is a **Premium** feature. **Tips:** - The mini SET made by **Export as Korg Sampler** can be opened as **SET B** in SetManager, and its sound dragged into any other SET. - Export as **SF2** to keep a backup of your favourite sounds that any sampler can read. - Want the sound on a Medeli AKX? Export as **VOI** / **KIT** — or simply drag it onto an AKX Samples pack (see [Medeli AKX](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx)). ## Sound Details — look inside a sound Choose **Details** in the right-click menu. The window shows how the sound is mapped on the keyboard, key by key. ![Sound Details of “Acordeon Juzi” (v3.0): key E4 clicked.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sound-details.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. A keyboard covering the full range. **Click a key** to hear it and inspect it (hold the mouse to keep it sounding). 2. The **zone strip**: each coloured block is one sample and the keys it covers. Click a block for its info. 3. Information about the key you clicked: the sample name and its **zone** — original note, from/to, level, pitch and loop points. 4. **▶ Play** — hear the clicked key again. 5. **Parameters** of the oscillator: octave, transpose, tune, velocity range, key range and voice mode. 6. **Effects** used by the sound (MFX1, MFX2…) with their send levels. 7. **Oscillators** of the sound with their number of zones. Click one to show it. 8. Right-click an oscillator → **View samples** lists its samples, each with a ▶ button. For a **drum kit**, every key can be a different instrument, so the window shows more per key: ![Sound Details of a drum kit (“Stefan Kit”, v3.0): key C2.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sound-details-drum.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Every coloured block under the keys is one drum sound. Click a key. 2. **ROM** badge: this key uses a factory sample of the keyboard (not stored in the SET). 3. **Sample**: note, level and loop (drums are usually “off (one-shot)”). 4. **Voice Assign & Routing**: single trigger, exclusive group, pan, note on/off receive, sends to MFX 1 and 2. 5. **Sound**: attack, decay, transpose, cutoff, resonance and tune of this key. 6. **Kit Effects** of the drum kit. 7. For drum kits the right column shows **Drum Kit** and how many keys it has. **Tips:** - Use Details to check whether a sound is complete before copying it: keys marked **ROM** depend on the factory samples of the keyboard. - The loop points (start – end) tell you whether a sample loops. “off (one-shot)” means it plays once and stops. - Press `Esc` or **Close** to close the window. ## Delete a sound Choose **Delete Sound** in the right-click menu. ![The Delete Sound window.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sound-delete.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. The sound you are about to delete. 2. **Also delete assigned RAM samples** — also removes its samples from the PCM banks. Only samples that **no other sound uses** are removed. 3. If you leave it unticked, only the sound entry is removed from the .PCG file; the samples stay. 4. **Cancel** or **Delete**. > **You can undo it:** Deleting goes to the SET A **working copy**, like every other change. Your SET on disk is not touched until you press **Save** in SetManager, and **Undo** (`Ctrl+Z` while SetManager is open) brings the sound back. See [Saving & Undo](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving). --- # PCM Banks Every sample stored in the RAM banks of your SET: filter, search, listen, see the waveform, export WAV, compress to save memory and remove duplicate samples. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=pcm-banks In this chapter: - What a PCM sample is and what each column means - Selecting one, several or a range of samples - Compress and uncompress samples to save memory - Find and remove duplicate samples safely - Export samples as WAV files ## What are PCM banks? The sounds of a KORG SET are built from **samples** — short recordings of a real instrument. The samples are stored in files called `RAM01.PCM`, `RAM02.PCM`… inside the SET’s `PCM` folder. Each of these files is a **PCM bank**. The PCM Banks section lists **every sample of every bank** in one table. > **Note:** One sample can be used by several sounds. That is why deleting samples here is more delicate than deleting a sound — use Check Duplicates and [Check Unused](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#btn-check-unused) instead of deleting by hand. ## The PCM table and toolbar ![PCM Banks of a PA4X SET: “Blerim 15 MG” selected, its waveform below.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/pcm-banks.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. How many samples the SET has (713 here). 2. How many samples you have **selected**. 3. **All samples / Compressed / Decompressed** and **All Banks / RAM1, RAM2…** — show only some samples. 4. **Search sample…** — type part of a name. `Esc` clears it. 5. **Compress SET** (all samples, or only samples longer than 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 seconds) and **Uncompress SET**. 6. **Check Duplicates** — finds identical samples stored more than once. 7. **Play PCM** plays the selected sample once · **Export WAV** saves the selection as WAV. 8. 40 samples per page: **page buttons** and a box to jump to a page. 9. **Loop S–E**: the loop start and end. “None” = the sample does not loop. 10. The **selected** sample. 11. Details of the selected sample: bank, sample rate, length, duration and loop start. 12. **Waveform Viewer** — the selected sample, with a dashed line where the **loop** starts. | Column | Meaning | | --- | --- | | Bank | Which PCM bank the sample is in (RAM1, RAM2…). | | ID | The sample’s unique 16-digit identifier. | | Name | The sample name. | | Format | The data format of the sample (for example Fmt16 = 16-bit). | | Compressed | Whether the sample is stored compressed. | | Sample Rate | Recording rate, e.g. 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz. | | Samples | The length in sample frames. | | Loop S–E | Loop start – end, or None. | | Duration | Length in seconds. | ### Selecting samples - **Click** — select one sample (and show its waveform). - `Ctrl` + **click** — add or remove one sample from the selection. - `Shift` + **click** — select everything between the last click and this one. ## The right-click menu ![Right-click menu with three samples selected.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/pcm-context.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Three samples selected with Ctrl + click. 2. The menu acts on the **whole selection**: Export as WAV, Compress (or Decompress) Selected, Delete. | Item | What it does | | --- | --- | | Play | Plays the sample once (only when one sample is selected). | | Export as WAV | One sample → choose a file name; several → choose a folder. | | Compress / Compress Selected | Stores the samples compressed (only on models that support compression). A **Compression Results** window shows what happened. | | Decompress / Decompress Selected | Stores them uncompressed again. | | Delete / Delete N Samples | Removes the samples from the .PCM files and RAM.KMP (after a confirmation). | > **Warning:** Only delete samples by hand when you are sure no sound uses them. A sound that loses its sample becomes silent on those keys. The safe tools are **Check Duplicates** (below) and **Check Unused** in SetManager. > **Every change here can be undone:** Deleting, compressing, decompressing and the duplicate clean-up all go to the SET A **working copy**. Your SET on disk changes only when you press **Save** in SetManager — and **Undo** takes a step back. See [Saving & Undo](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving). ## Compress or uncompress to save memory Keyboards with compression (PA700, PA1000, PA3X, PA4X) can store samples **compressed**, so more samples fit into their memory. When your SET is too big for the memory bar, compressing is the quickest fix. **Step 1 — Choose what to compress** Open **Compress SET ▾**: “Compress all samples” or only samples longer than **1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 seconds**. Long samples save the most memory. **Step 2 — Confirm** The program asks “Compress all samples? This may take a while.” Confirm and wait. **Step 3 — Check the memory bar** The memory bar at the top updates. Listen to a few sounds to make sure you like the result. > **Note:** The compression tools appear only when the chosen keyboard model supports compression, and never for PA5X KSTs. **Uncompress SET** turns every compressed sample back to normal. ## Check Duplicates — free memory safely Big SETs often contain the **same sample twice** (for example after copying sounds from other SETs). **Check Duplicates** finds identical audio and lets you keep one copy. Sounds that used a removed copy are **re-pointed** to the kept one, so they sound exactly the same. ![Check Duplicates on a PA4X SET: 15 groups, 633 KB to recover.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/pcm-duplicates.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Summary: groups of identical samples, redundant copies, copies nobody uses and how much memory you can recover. 2. One **group**: the same audio stored twice. 3. **KEEP** = the copy that stays. **IN USE** = a sound uses it. Unused copies show **UNUSED**. 4. ▶ — listen to a copy to compare. 5. **Delete & Remap** — removes this copy and moves its sounds to the kept one. Unused copies show a simple **Delete**. 6. Changes are saved to the SET, and a backup of every changed file is kept. 7. **Delete All Unused** and **Delete & Remap All** — do every group at once. **Tips:** - Samples whose names only differ by the side — like “Shagy (06L)” and “Shagy (06R)” — are the left and right halves of a **stereo** sample. They are not duplicates and are not listed. - Start with **Delete All Unused**: it cannot change how any sound plays. - After a clean-up, open the Sound Library and play a few of the re-pointed sounds. ## Export samples as WAV 1. Select one or more samples (click, Ctrl + click, Shift + click). 2. Press **Export WAV** (or right-click → **Export as WAV**). 3. One sample: choose the file name. Several: choose a folder — each sample becomes its own `.wav`. The WAV files are 16-bit mono at the sample’s own rate, ready for any DAW or sampler. --- # Oscillators How the selected sound is built: its oscillators (layers), their key and velocity ranges, octave, transpose and tune, and which multisample each one plays. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=oscillators In this chapter: - What an oscillator is - How to read the HIGH and LOW boxes - How to mute an oscillator to hear one layer alone ## What is an oscillator? A KORG sound can stack several **layers** that play together — for example a soft accordion and a hard accordion, or a piano plus strings. Each layer is an **oscillator**. Every oscillator plays a **multisample** (a set of samples spread over the keyboard) and has its own range, octave, transpose and tune. Select a sound in the [Sound Library](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library) first, then click **Oscillators** in the sidebar. ## Reading an oscillator card ![Oscillators of “Acordeon Juzi”: OSC 1 plays “AC JUZI” on hard strikes and “Grand Piano L” on soft ones.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/oscillators.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. The sound you selected in the Sound Library. 2. **OSC n** with a tick box. Untick it to **mute** this oscillator when you play the sound. 3. Key range (e.g. C-1 – G9), velocity range (Vel:1-127) and **Vel Switch** when the oscillator changes sample with velocity. 4. **Octave**, **Transpose** and **Tune** of the oscillator. 5. **HIGH** — what plays on **hard** key strikes: source (RAM or ROM), multisample number, level, and the multisample name with its number of zones. 6. **LOW** — what plays on **soft** key strikes. | Text | Meaning | | --- | --- | | src=RAM | The multisample is stored in the SET (portable). | | src=ROM | The multisample is one of the keyboard’s factory multisamples. | | num=N | The multisample number. | | lv=N | The level (volume) of that layer, 0–127. | | → "Name" (N zones) | The multisample name and how many key zones it has. | | → ROM: "Name" | The factory multisample used. | **Tips:** - Untick every oscillator except one and play the on-screen keyboard to hear that layer **alone**. The ticks reset when you select another sound — nothing is saved. - If a sound has HIGH and LOW layers with **Vel Switch**, play the keys softly and then hard to hear the change. - Drum kits have no oscillators: the section says “No oscillators in this sound”. Use **Details** in the Sound Library instead. --- # Samples The samples used by the sound you selected: one row per sample with its root note, bank, format and rate — play them one by one and export them as WAV. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=samples In this chapter: - How the Samples section differs from PCM Banks - Playing and exporting a single sample - Compressing the samples of one sound ## The samples of one sound [PCM Banks](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=pcm-banks) shows **all** samples of the SET. **Samples** shows only the samples used by **the sound selected** in the Sound Library — ordered by the note they belong to. It is the fastest way to check a sampler key by key. ![The 60 samples of “Acordeon Juzi”, one per semitone.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/samples.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Play Sample** plays the selected sample at its own pitch · **Export WAV** saves it (the file is named after its root note, e.g. D#2.wav). 2. Columns: #, Note, Name, Bank, Actual (real RAM bank, drum kits only), Format, Compress, Rate and Samples. 3. The **root note** of the sample — the key where it plays at its original pitch. 4. The **selected** sample. | Column | Meaning | | --- | --- | | Note | Root note. For drum kits: the key of the drum. | | Bank | RAM for melodic sounds. For drum kits: ROM (factory) or RAMn. | | Actual | Drum kits only: the real RAM bank the sample is stored in. | | Format · Compress | Data format and whether the sample is compressed. | | Rate · Samples | Sample rate and length in frames. | - Select with **click**, `Ctrl` + click or `Shift` + click. - Right-click → **Compress** / **Decompress** (same rules as in PCM Banks: only on models with compression, never on PA5X). > **Tip:** Looking for a sample used by a sound you are about to delete? Check it here first — then decide in the Delete window whether to also delete its RAM samples. --- # Converter Convert one style between KORG Pa (.STY), KORG PA5X (.stg), Yamaha, Medeli AKX, Ketron and MIDI — with section mapping, previews, warnings, a fidelity check and per-track settings. Plus a look at the Sampler Converter that is coming soon. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter In this chapter: - Which formats you can convert from and to - Converting a style step by step - Reading the section map, warnings and target capabilities - Fine-tuning the result with Style Settings (tracks, chord rules, hand sounds) - Checking the result with Verify Fidelity ## What the Converter does The **Style Converter** takes **one style** in any supported format and writes it in another format, so you can play a KORG style on a Yamaha, a Yamaha style on a KORG, a PA5X style on an older Pa, a style on a Medeli AKX, and so on. 1. **Import** a style (.STY, .stg, Yamaha / Medeli .sty, Ketron .kst or .mid) 2. **Choose the target** keyboard / format 3. **Check** the section map, warnings and previews 4. Optional: **Style Settings** and **Verify Fidelity** 5. **CONVERT** and choose the output folder > **One style at a time:** The Converter section converts one style at a time. To convert **many** styles at once, use one of these: > • **Import Style** on an empty slot in SetManager — any format becomes a style of your SET. > • **Convert** in SetManager — converts a whole SET. ## Supported formats | Format | Import (source) | Export (target) | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | KORG Pa .STY (PA300 – PA4X) | ✔ (a bank: you pick the style) | ✔ “KORG PA700/1000/PA4X (.STY)” and “KORG PA300/600/900 (.STY)” | Multi-CV, NTT/ranges, any meter. | | KORG PA5X .stg | ✔ | ✔ “KORG PA5X (.stg)” | Multi-CV, NTT/ranges. Per-track EQ is not carried. | | Yamaha .sty (SFF) | ✔ | ✔ “Yamaha Style (.sty)” | 1 CV per part (+1 alternative), CASM chord rules, OTS. | | Medeli AKX10 .sty | ✔ | ✔ “Medeli AKX10 (.sty)” | 1 CV, rules via CASM, Quick Settings, 4/4 grid only. | | Ketron / Audya .kst | ✔ | ✔ “Ketron / Audya (.kst)” | MAJ/MIN/SEV built from the CVs, no NTT/ranges. | | Standard MIDI .mid | ✔ only with section markers (Main A, Intro 1, Fill In AA…) | ✔ “Standard MIDI (.mid) — up to 2 CVs” | One marker per section. | | PA SET EXPLORER MIDI .mid | ✔ | ✔ “PA SET EXPLORER MIDI (.mid) — edit in a DAW, convert back” | Every CV is a segment and the original style travels inside: convert it back after editing in a DAW. | *Roland, Yamaha .prs/.sst/.fps and pad files are not style sources in the Converter.* > **The PA SET EXPLORER MIDI trick:** Want to edit a style in your DAW (Cubase, Reaper, FL Studio…)? Convert it to **PA SET EXPLORER MIDI (.mid)**, edit the notes, then import that .mid again and convert it back to the original format. If you did not touch the notes, the result is byte-identical to the original; if you did, your edits are patched into the original style. ## Convert a style, step by step **Step 1 — Open the Converter** Click **Converter** in the sidebar. Make sure **Style Converter** is selected at the top. **Step 2 — Import the style** Click **⬆ Import Style/Mid…** and choose where the style comes from: ![Screenshot](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/conv-import.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Community** — one of the styles you downloaded from the Community. 2. **Browse…** — any style or MIDI file on your PC (.STY, .sty, .stg, .kst, .mid). > **Tip:** If the file is a KORG .STY bank with several styles, a list appears: pick the one you want. **Step 3 — Choose the target and check everything** Pick the target in **Target:**. The screen fills with the section map: ![A PA5X style (“Draga tata”) ready to become a Yamaha style.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/converter-main.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Style Converter** / **Sampler Converter** (the second one is still in development). 2. Each **target section** lets you choose which source section fills it, or “— (empty) —”. 15. **▸ Advanced options** — output name and special switches. 16. **⚙ Style Settings** — tracks, chord rules and hand sounds of the result. 17. **✓ Verify Fidelity** — convert in memory and compare. 18. **⚡ CONVERT** — write the file. **Step 4 — Optional: Advanced options** Open **▸ Advanced options** to rename the output or use the special switches: ![Screenshot](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/conv-advanced.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Open / close the options. 2. **Output name** — leave empty to keep the source name. If the file exists, “(1)” is added. 3. **Relocate ACMP-Perc track** (Yamaha / Medeli targets) — moves melodic ACMP-Percussion content to a free melodic channel so the target does not play it as drums. > **Tip:** For KORG and PA5X targets the switch is **Faithful ranges (no widening)**: it keeps the source keyboard ranges exactly. It is ticked automatically when the source is KORG. **Step 5 — Press ⚡ CONVERT** Choose the output folder. If the source has KORG **Guitar Mode** tracks and the target is Yamaha, Medeli or Ketron, you are asked “Transcribe Guitar Mode Tracks?” — **Yes** rebuilds them as real guitar notes, **No** keeps the raw KORG trigger notes. For Medeli targets you may also see “No free part for a chord-following track” (see the FAQ). When it is done, a message shows “Style converted: ”. ## Style Settings — fine-tune the result **⚙ Style Settings** changes **only the converted output** — the source file is never modified. It has three tabs. ![Style Settings → TRACKS.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/conv-settings-tracks.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **TRACKS**, **CHORD RULES** and **HAND SOUNDS (OTS/STS/QS)**. 2. Program = General MIDI number, Vol = volume. 3. Four setups, each with Right 1, Right 2, Right 3 and Left. 4. **GM** program number (0–127). 5. **Vol** (0–127). ## Verify Fidelity — check before you convert **✓ Verify Fidelity** converts the style in memory, reads the result back and compares it with the source: ![Verify Fidelity: PA5X → KORG Pa .STY, 100% of the notes kept.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/conv-verify.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Target: KORG PA700/1000/PA4X (.STY). 2. This target keeps every CV, the NTT and ranges, and any time signature. 3. **Faithful ranges** is ticked automatically for KORG targets. 4. Press **✓ Verify Fidelity**. 5. Result: **Sections kept 10/10**, **Notes 100%**, **Ranges 100%** — a perfect conversion. > **Why other targets show lower numbers:** Yamaha and Medeli store fewer Chord Variations per part, and Ketron has its own MAJ/MIN/SEV system. For those targets the note percentage can be lower because the converter has to **reduce** the variations (the Warnings box explains exactly what). Read the warnings, listen to the previews and decide. ## Sampler Converter (in development) ![The Sampler Converter tab today.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/conv-sampler-dev.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Sampler Converter**. 2. The feature is being built and will arrive in a coming update. 3. **IN DEVELOPMENT**. > **Dev:** The Sampler Converter (SoundFont hub with an advanced waveform editor) is **in development**. Meanwhile you can already convert sounds in other ways: > • **Export** a sound as .sf2, .voi/.kit, KORG sampler or WAV from the [Sound Library](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library#export-sound). > • **Import** .sf2, .voi, .uvn, .kmp, .kit and .uvd files into a KORG SET (see [Importing](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=importing#import-samplers)). > • **Drag** KORG samplers and drum kits onto Medeli AKX packs (see [Medeli AKX](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#korg-to-akx)). ## Tips for great conversions **Tips:** - Always read the **Warnings** box: it tells you exactly what the target cannot store. - Listen to a few sections with **▶** on both sides before converting — the previews sound like the exported .mid. - Converting between KORG Pa and PA5X keeps the most information: use **Verify Fidelity** to see it. - For Yamaha and Medeli, open **Style Settings → CHORD RULES** to check how each track follows the chords. - Use **.mid** on a section to quickly share or inspect one part of a style. - Want the style **inside** a SET instead of as a file? Use **Import Style** on an empty slot in SetManager: it uses this same converter. --- # SetManager The heart of PA SET Explorer: your SET laid out bank by bank and page by page like on the keyboard, a second SET next to it, and every tool to build, convert and clean SETs — Import/Merge, Create New Set, Convert, Medeli AKX, Copy Options and Check Unused. What will be created: 99 PCM banks (RAM01–RAM99.PCM), RAM.KMP, the USER PCG files and 12 style banks. 4. **Continue** — then choose the folder where the SET is created. The new `.SET` is created empty in the folder you choose and opened as SET A. Style banks get 5 pages on PA300 / PA600 / PA900 / PA3X and 6 pages on PA700 / PA1000 / PA4X. > **Need a PA5X KST?:** Create New Set makes PA300 – PA4X SETs. To get a PA5X KST, build or open a KORG SET and use Convert → KORG PA5X (.KST). ## Convert — the whole SET in one go **Convert** converts the complete **SET A**. The choices depend on what SET A is: | SET A is… | You can convert it to… | | --- | --- | | A KORG SET (PA300 – PA4X) | **KORG PA5X (.KST)** · **Medeli AKX / Zen** · **Yamaha** · **Ketron** | | A KORG PA5X KST | **KORG PA300 / PA600 / PA900 / PA3X** (.SET, 40 styles per bank) · **KORG PA700 / PA1000 / PA4X** (.SET, 48 styles per bank) · **Medeli AKX / Zen** · **Yamaha** · **Ketron** | | A KORG SET + a Medeli AKX set are open | First choose **what** to convert: the KORG SET A or the Medeli AKX set (AKX → KORG). | ![Convert SET A — a KORG PA4X SET.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-convert.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. KORG PA5X (.KST) selected. 2. One folder per style bank; every style becomes .stg; every sampler and drum kit is rebuilt in a new PA5X sample template in the **same bank and slot**, so the styles keep their sounds. 3. Choose the output folder and convert. > **Note:** GLOBAL, PERFORM, PAD and SONGBOOK are not converted to the KST. ### PA5X KST → older KORG SET - **Model** — older (PA300, PA600, PA900, PA3X; default PA3X) or newer (PA700, PA1000, PA4X; default PA700). The window shows how many styles per bank and how many standard banks it has. - **Style banks (.STY)** — **Automatic**, **One PA5X folder per bank**, or **Fill the banks one after the other**. If more banks are needed than the standard 12, extra banks get new names (FAVORITE13… / USER13…). - **Style folders** — tick the PA5X folders you want (All · None). - Samples: if the KST was made from an older SET, samples and sounds are copied as they are. Native PA5X samples are not copied — bring the sounds you need afterwards with Import/Merge. ### KORG → Yamaha or Ketron ![Options for Yamaha (Ketron has the same, without RX noises).](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-convert-yamaha.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Yamaha selected. 2. **Transcribe Guitar Mode tracks into a real guitar** (on by default). 3. **Also transcribe RX noises** — Yamaha only (choose a Mega Voice guitar on the Yamaha for those parts). 4. **Export the SET’s samples & drum kits as .sf2** — with how many there are. 5. Output: `Styles//…` and `Samples//…` plus a report of which KORG sound (MSB/LSB/PC) each .sf2 replaces. 6. Choose folder & Convert. ### KORG → Medeli AKX / Zen The button becomes **Create AKX Set…**: you name the new AKX set and choose its memory, then the **Convert KORG SET → Medeli AKX/Zen** window opens by itself. See [Medeli AKX → Convert a whole KORG SET](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#convert-set-to-akx). ### Progress and result - While converting you see the overall progress, the current bank, the time left and a log. **Cancel** stops after the current style. - At the end: styles converted, not converted, banks, samplers / drum kits and sample files. A conversion report (.txt) is written in the output folder. - **Load in SET B** opens the new SET/KST next to yours, **Open folder** shows it in Windows. New SETs and KSTs are added to Resources automatically. > **Warning:** Choose an output folder **outside** the SET you are converting — the program refuses a folder inside it. > **Premium:** Convert is a **Premium** feature. ## Create AKX/Zen Set and Load AKX/Zen Set - **Create AKX/Zen Set** — Name the new set, choose **256 MB** or **768 MB** of memory, press Create and pick the parent folder. The set is created as a sub-folder. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#create-load)) - **Load AKX/Zen Set** — Choose the memory of the set (256 / 768 MB, for the memory bar), then pick its **.GSTarget** file. ([more](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#create-load)) Everything about Medeli AKX sets is in the [Medeli AKX / Zen](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx) chapter. ## Copy Options — every switch explained **Copy Options** decides **what travels with a style** when you copy it from SET B to SET A, or from a KORG SET to a Medeli AKX set. Set them **before** you drag. ![Copy Options.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-copy-options.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **Save Styles Samples & DrumKits** — also copy the RAM samples and drum kits the style uses. 2. **Save Styles STS** — copy the sounds of the style’s Single Touch Settings. 3. **Copy Styles Pads** (KORG SET↔SET) — also copy the style’s 4 USER pads. 4. **Relocate ACMP Percussion** (Medeli AKX / Yamaha) — move a melodic ACMP Perc track to a free channel. 5. **Transcribe Guitar Mode** (Medeli AKX / Yamaha) — turn KORG guitar strums into real guitar notes. 6. **Transcribe RX Noises** (Medeli AKX / Yamaha) — also write the guitar noises and techniques. 7. **Copy Styles Pads** (Medeli AKX) — bundle the style’s pads into a Medeli pad. 8. **Done** — or click outside to close. | Switch | Default | When ON | When OFF | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Save Styles Samples & DrumKits | Off | The user samplers and drum kits the style uses (RAM sounds) are copied too — with their PCM samples and multisamples — and the style is re-pointed to the copies. Into a PA5X KST the sounds come along as well. Into an AKX set the samples are converted with the style. | Only the style is copied. Its tracks keep pointing to the same sound numbers, which may be different (or empty) sounds in SET A. | | Save Styles STS | Off | The style’s STS (Single Touch Settings) keep their sounds. When you switch it on you are asked whether to also save the PCM samples those STS sounds use if SET A does not have them (**Deny / Confirm**). For AKX the STS sounds go into an “STS” pack. | The copied style gets a default STS (STS 1–4 with Grand Piano on Upper 1, the other parts off). | | Copy Styles Pads (KORG SET↔SET) | Off | The style’s 4 assigned USER pads are copied and the style points to them. Factory pads stay as they are; identical pads are reused. | The style’s USER pad references are cleared. | | Relocate ACMP Percussion (Medeli AKX / Yamaha) | Off | A KORG Perc track set to ACMP is moved to a free accompaniment channel (Medeli’s Perc channel only accepts drum kits). If no channel is free, the track is dropped. | The Perc track stays where it is. | | Transcribe Guitar Mode (Medeli AKX / Yamaha) | **On** | KORG Guitar Mode tracks are transcribed into a real guitar: fretboard voicings, strum direction, muted and dead strokes, ringing strings. | The raw KORG trigger notes are kept. | | Transcribe RX Noises (Medeli AKX / Yamaha) | Off | With Guitar Mode on: also writes the guitar strum noises (KORG RX noises) and playing techniques by velocity. Medeli AKX uses the AXS guitar voices; on Yamaha choose a Mega Voice guitar. | Clean guitar notes only. | | Copy Styles Pads (Medeli AKX) | Off | When a style is added to an AKX set, its pads are bundled into one Medeli pad named after the style, in a “Pads” pack. Missing samplers / drum kits are copied, existing ones reused. | No pad is created. | **Tips:** - Copying styles from a SET that uses its own samples? Turn on **Save Styles Samples & DrumKits** — otherwise the style may play with the wrong sounds in SET A. - Watch the memory bar: copying samples uses SET A’s sample memory. If there is not enough room, the copy stops with a clear message. - Transcribe RX Noises only works together with Transcribe Guitar Mode (it is greyed out otherwise). ## Check Unused **Check Unused** scans every sound, style and performance of SET A and lists the sounds that **nothing uses**. Deleting them frees slots and sample memory. ![Unused Sounds: 4 of 67 sounds are not used by any style or performance.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-check-unused.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets In this chapter: - What you can do in SET A and what in SET B - Copying one style, a selection, a page or a whole bank - Copying samplers, drum kits and pads - The rules for PA5X KSTs and older SETs - KORG ↔ Medeli AKX: what goes where ## SET A or SET B — who does what **SET A — the destination** - The SET you opened with **Open SET/KST** (or created with Create New Set). - Everything you drag **lands here**. - You can move, rename, delete, import and edit styles, sounds and pads. - All changes go to a **working copy**: Undo, Redo and Save. - **Style Properties** can be edited. **SET B — the source** - The SET you loaded with **Import/Merge → KORG SET / KST**. - You **take** things from here and drop them on SET A. - Select many items with `Ctrl` / `Shift` + click, or drag a whole page or bank. - Style Properties open **read-only** (badge “SET B · Read-only”). - Styles dropped on SET B are not accepted: style drag & drop always goes to SET A. > **Tip:** Think of SET A as your suitcase and SET B as the shop: you take from the shop and put into the suitcase. When the suitcase is ready, press **Save**. ## Copy one style from SET B to SET A **Step 1 — Set your Copy Options** Click **Copy Options** and switch on what should travel with the style — usually **Save Styles Samples & DrumKits** (see [Copy Options](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#copy-options)). **Step 2 — Find the style in SET B and the place in SET A** Choose the bank and page in both SETs. While you drag, resting over a bank button for about 1.5 seconds switches to that bank, and resting over a page button switches the page. **Step 3 — Drag and drop** Press on the style in SET B, move the mouse onto a slot of SET A and release. ![Dragging a style from SET B to SET A.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-dragging.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. The style in SET B (“Trubaci sa”). 2. While dragging, a label follows the mouse: **[B] Trubaci sa**. 3. Drop it on a slot of SET A. 4. Resting over a bank switches to it (here Fav 3). **Step 4 — Done!** The style is in SET A. The status says “Style copied from SET B” and the **Save** button shows how many changes are waiting. ![After the copy.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-after-copy.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. The copied style in SET A. 2. **Undo** — take the copy back. 3. **Redo**. 4. **Save** with the number of pending changes. 5. “Style copied from SET B”. > **An occupied slot is replaced:** Dropping one style from SET B on an **occupied** slot of SET A replaces the style that was there, without asking. That is what Undo is for. (Moving a style **inside** SET A onto an occupied slot asks first: “Slot Already Occupied” → Cancel / Replace.) ## Copy many styles: selection, page or bank ![A group selection in SET B.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-group.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. `Ctrl` + click styles in SET B to select them (or `Shift` + click for a range). 2. “3 styles selected in SET B — drag them onto a SET A bank, page or slot”. 3. Drag the selection onto a SET A **bank**, **page** or **slot**. 4. You can also drag a SET B **page button** (P1, P2…)… 5. …or a whole SET B **bank button**. | You drag… | Onto… | What happens | | --- | --- | --- | | A selection of styles | a SET A bank, page or slot | The styles fill **free** slots, starting there. If there are not enough, the rest is reported (“no free slot left…”). | | A SET B page button | a SET A page | The styles go to the **same positions** of that page. If styles would be replaced you are asked “Replace N styles?”. | | A SET B bank button | a SET A bank | The whole bank is copied slot by slot. You are asked “Replace the whole bank?”. SET A styles without a counterpart are removed; the bank’s “New Style” template is kept. | After a group transfer a **Transfer report** lists what was copied. The whole group counts as **one** step for Undo. **Tips:** - Group transfers work the same way in the **SOUNDS** tab (samplers to sampler banks, drum kits to drum kit banks). - Copy Options apply to every style of the group. ## Copy samplers and drum kits In the **SOUNDS** tab, drag a sound from SET B onto a slot of SET A. Its samples (PCM) and multisample (RAM.KMP) are copied with it. - Samplers go into **sampler** banks (User…), drum kits into **drum kit** banks (USERDK…). Dropping the wrong type is refused: “Cannot drop drum kit into sampler bank”. - Inside the same SET, dragging **moves** the sound. Onto an occupied slot you are asked “Slot Already Occupied” → Replace. - If SET A has not enough sample memory, the copy stops: “not enough sample memory in SET A (needs X MB, Y MB free)”. Compress samples or remove unused sounds first. > **Tip:** Styles call sounds by number (MSB / LSB / PC). If you copy a style **without** its samples, make sure SET A has the right sounds at those numbers — or turn on **Save Styles Samples & DrumKits** and let the program do it for you. ## Copy pads In the **PADS** tab, drag a pad from SET B onto a slot of SET A. To bring the pads **of a style** automatically, switch on **Copy Styles Pads (KORG SET↔SET)** in Copy Options and copy the style. ![Copying a pad.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-pads.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Otherwise you get a clear message. | **Tips:** - The format is detected from the file’s content, not only its name — so a Medeli .sty and a Yamaha .sty are never confused. - Want more control (tracks, chord rules, tempo)? Convert it first in the [Converter](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter) with Style Settings, then import the converted file. - Importing also works on an empty slot of **SET B**. ## Import a sampler or drum kit into a KORG SET **Step 1 — Right-click an empty sound slot** In SetManager → SOUNDS, right-click an empty slot. In a sampler bank the menu says **Import Sampler (.sf2 .voi .uvn .kmp)…**, in a drum kit bank **Import DrumKit (.sf2 .kit .uvd)…**. ![Screenshot](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-sound-empty.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. Saving goes to the SET A working copy (it appears in the Save list as “Event Editor”). > **Premium:** The Event Editor is a **Premium** feature. --- # Saving & Undo How PA SET Explorer protects your SET: every change goes to a working copy and into a list. Undo and redo any step, review everything in the Save window, and write it to your SET only when you are happy. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving In this chapter: - What the working copy is and why your SET is safe - Undo, Redo and the keyboard shortcuts - The Save window: Save changes or Discard changes - What happens when you close the program or open another SET - What is saved immediately (and what is not) ## The working copy — your SET is safe When you open a SET as SET A, PA SET Explorer makes a **working copy** of it. Every change — copying, importing, renaming, deleting, compressing, editing styles — happens on that copy. **Your real SET folder is not touched until you press Save.** 1. You open your SET 2. The program prepares a **working copy** 3. You make changes — each one is **recorded** 4. **Undo / Redo** as much as you like 5. **Save** writes the changes into your SET Things that are recorded (and can be undone): - **Styles** — Copy from SET B, move, rename, delete, import, STS and track changes in Style Properties, Event Editor saves. - **Sounds** — Copy from SET B, import sampler / drum kit, rename, delete. - **Samples (PCM)** — Delete, compress, decompress, duplicate clean-up. - **Pads** — Copy from SET B. - **Performances** — Copy, rename, delete and track changes. - **Groups** — A group transfer (selection, page or bank) counts as one step. ## Undo and Redo ![The Undo / Redo / Save box in SetManager.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-after-copy.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. A change you made (a copied style). 2. **Undo** — takes the last change back. Hover it to see which change. 3. **Redo** — puts it back. 4. **Save** — the badge shows how many changes are waiting. 5. The status line confirms what happened. | Keys | Action | | --- | --- | | `Ctrl+Z` | **Undo** the last change | | `Ctrl+Y` | **Redo** (also `Ctrl+Shift+Z`) | | `Ctrl+S` | Open the **Save** window | > **Where the shortcuts work:** These shortcuts work while **SetManager** is on screen, and not while you are typing in a text box or another window is open (text boxes and editors such as the Event Editor have their own Ctrl+Z). The buttons appear as soon as SET A has a working copy. ## The Save window Press **Save** (or `Ctrl+S`). You see every change, oldest first: ![Unsaved changes in SET A: 2 changes.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/sm-save-dialog.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. How many changes, and a reminder that the SET on disk is only written when you save. 2. Change 1: the time and what was done — “Copy style ‘Trubaci sa’ from SET B → FAVORITE03 008”. 3. The kind of change: Style, Sound, Sample, Pad, Perf or Group. 4. Change 2: “Rename style ‘Sarba STF’ → ‘Sarba STF New’”. 5. **Discard changes** — throw away all changes: SET A goes back to how it is on disk (you are asked to confirm). 6. **Cancel** — close the window and keep working. 7. **Save changes** — write everything into your SET. After saving, a message confirms how many files were written (and removed). The SET on disk is now exactly what you saw in the program — copy it to your USB stick and load it on the keyboard. **Tips:** - Save often when you build a big SET — each Save is a safe point. - Not sure about your changes? **Discard changes** brings the SET back to its last saved state in one click. - Saving writes files safely (to a temporary file first, then replacing), so a crash during saving does not leave half-written files. ## Closing the program or opening another SET | If you… | and SET A has unsaved changes… | | --- | --- | | open another SET (button, drag & drop, Resources), create a new SET or convert an AKX set to KORG | you are asked **“Save the changes to SET A first?”** → **Save** / **Don’t save** / **Cancel**. | | close the program | you are asked **“Unsaved changes in SET A”** → **Save and exit** / **Exit without saving** / **Cancel**. | > **Success:** You cannot lose your work by accident: the program always asks first. ## What is NOT part of the working copy | Item | When it is written | | --- | --- | | Medeli AKX / Zen sets | **Immediately** — every add, rename, delete or edit is written to the AKX set at once. There is no Undo for AKX sets: keep a backup of the AKX folder. | | AKX voice / kit Properties | When you press **💾 Save** in the Properties window (a backup is kept). | | Converter outputs | New files in the folder you choose — the source file is never changed. | | Exported sounds, styles, pads | New files in the folder you choose. | | Changes made in SET B | SET B is a source; the working copy, Undo and Save belong to SET A. | **Q: Is there a Ctrl+R shortcut?** No. Undo is `Ctrl+Z`, redo is `Ctrl+Y` (or `Ctrl+Shift+Z`), and `Ctrl+S` opens the Save window. **Q: I pressed Save by mistake. Can I go back?** Undo works on the changes since the last Save. After saving, the SET on disk is the new state. That is why it is a good idea to keep an untouched copy of your original SET. --- # Medeli AKX / Zen Create and load Medeli AKX/Zen sets, organise them in packs, import voices, kits and styles, edit voices layer by layer, edit styles and Quick Settings, and convert KORG SETs and KSTs into AKX — or AKX sets back into KORG. PA SET Explorer opens these sets and lets you fill them. **Create AKX/Zen Set** - SetManager → **Create AKX/Zen Set** - Type a name and choose **256 MB** or **768 MB** - Press **Create** and choose the parent folder - The set is created as a sub-folder with that name **Load AKX/Zen Set** - SetManager → **Load AKX/Zen Set** (or Resources, or drop the folder on the window) - Choose the memory of the set (for the memory bar) - Pick the set’s **.GSTarget** file ![Create Medeli AKX Set.](https://pasetexplorer.com/images/docs/akx-create-set.webp) Numbered marks on this screenshot: 1. **AKX Set name**. 2. **Memory**: 256 MB or 768 MB. 3. There you browse styles, samples and drum kits shared by other musicians and get them straight into the program, converted for your instrument. Downloads appear in [Resources → Community](https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources#resources-community). Use **Push to Community** on a style or a sound to share your own. ## Language Click the globe button in the header to choose the language of the menus. The choice is saved and you can change it at any time. --- # Questions & Answers Short, clear answers to the questions musicians ask us most. Type a word in the filter (for example “drum kit”, “PA5X”, “undo”, “Yamaha”) or pick a category. Web page: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=faq ## General ### What exactly does PA SET Explorer do? It opens the SETs of KORG Pa arranger keyboards (PA300 to PA4X) and PA5X KSTs on your PC, shows everything inside (styles, sounds, samples, pads, performances), lets you listen to it, combine SETs by drag & drop, import and convert styles and sounds between KORG, Yamaha, Medeli and Ketron, and build Medeli AKX/Zen sets. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=getting-started#what-is ### Do I need the keyboard connected? No. Everything works with the SET folder on your PC. A keyboard is only needed if you want to play the KORG Style Player on it over MIDI, or play sounds from a MIDI keyboard. ### Which keyboards are supported? KORG PA300, PA600, PA900, PA3X, PA700, PA1000, PA4X (SET folders) and PA5X (KST folders), plus Medeli AKX / Zen sets. Styles from Yamaha (SFF), Medeli and Ketron can be converted to and from KORG. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=getting-started#supported ### Does it run on Mac or Linux? PA SET Explorer is a Windows program (Windows 10 or 11). ### Do I need internet? Internet is used for license checks, updates and the Community. Exploring and editing SETs works on your computer. ### What is the difference between Basic and Premium? Basic lets you open, explore and listen, and do the everyday work. Premium unlocks the advanced tools — for example Import/Merge, Convert (whole SETs), Check Unused, exporting sounds and the Event Editor. Premium buttons show a padlock on Basic. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=getting-started#plans ### Can I upgrade from Basic to Premium later? Yes — on the Plans page you only pay the difference. ### Is there a trial? Yes, a short Trial with Premium features. Its days left are shown in Profile. ### Can the program damage my SET? SET A is edited on a working copy: your real SET is only written when you press Save, and you can undo every step before that. Still, always keep an untouched copy of your original SET — it is good practice with any tool. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving#working-copy ### How do I change the language of the program? Click the globe button in the header and pick a language. ## Opening SETs ### How do I open my SET? Press **Open SET/KST** and select the folder whose name ends in `.SET` or `.KST` (not a file inside it). You can also drag that folder onto the program window, or double-click it in Resources. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources#open-set ### I selected the folder but nothing loads / it looks empty. You probably selected a sub-folder (SOUND, STYLE, PCM…) or a folder above the SET. Select the folder that **contains** SOUND, STYLE, PCM etc. ### Which model should I choose in “Select Korg Model”? The keyboard the SET will be played on. It sets the memory bar (so you see if it fits) and whether sample compression is offered. You can press Skip if you only want to look. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=getting-started#first-launch ### Why does a PA5X KST not ask for the model? The program recognises a PA5X KST by itself and selects PA5X automatically. ### What does the memory bar at the top mean? It shows the chosen model, how much sample memory the SET uses, how much is still free and the limit. Orange above 70%, red above 90%. If it is over the limit, compress samples or remove unused sounds. ### My SET is in a .zip or .rar file. Extract it first with Windows (or 7-Zip / WinRAR), then open the extracted `.SET` / `.KST` folder. ### What is Resources? Your personal library: every SET, KST, AKX set and style you opened or added, plus your Community downloads. It only remembers where things are; it never copies or moves files. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=open-and-resources#resources ### A Resources card says the item no longer exists. You moved, renamed or deleted it in Windows. Remove the card with ✕ and add it again from its new location (Browse → Add Folder… / Add Style Files…). ### I dropped a style file on the window and nothing happened. The window only opens SET/KST and AKX folders. Drop style files into Resources → Browse instead, then double-click them to listen or use Import Style to put them into a SET. ## Sounds, samples & PCM ### How do I listen to a sound? In the Sound Library: press **▶ Demo**, click the on-screen keyboard (top of a key = soft, bottom = loud), or use your computer keyboard (A S D F G H J K L ; and W E T Y U O P, Z–M for the low octave, Shift / Ctrl for octave up / down). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library#listen ### What do RAM, Factory ROM and Mixed mean? **RAM**: the sound’s samples are inside the SET — it travels with the SET. **Factory ROM**: it uses the keyboard’s built-in samples. **Mixed**: some of each. Drum kits show “Unknown” in the list; open Details to see each key (ROM keys have a ROM badge). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library#overview ### Can I export a sound to use it in another program? Yes: right-click → Export → SF2 (SoundFont), VOI / KIT (Medeli), Korg Sampler (.PCG + RAM.KMP + .PCM) or WAV files. Exporting is a Premium feature. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library#export-sound ### Sampler Version 2.1 or 3.0 — which one? 2.1 for PA600, PA500 and older models; 3.0 for PA700, PA4X, PA1000 and newer. If the source is 2.1, only 2.1 is offered. ### “Export as Korg Sampler” is disabled. The sound uses only factory ROM samples, which are not in the SET. The KORG sampler export needs RAM samples. ### If I delete a sound, are its samples deleted too? Only if you tick “Also delete assigned RAM samples”, and only the samples that no other sound uses. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=sound-library#delete-sound ### What is the difference between PCM Banks and Samples? PCM Banks lists every sample of the SET. Samples lists only the samples of the sound you selected in the Sound Library. ### How do I free memory by removing duplicate samples? PCM Banks → Check Duplicates. Delete unused copies first (Delete All Unused). For copies in use, Delete & Remap re-points the sounds to the kept copy, so they sound exactly the same. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=pcm-banks#duplicates ### Check Duplicates does not list my “(L)” and “(R)” samples. Why? Samples whose names only differ by the side — like “(06L)” and “(06R)” — are the left and right halves of a stereo sample. They are not duplicates. ### What does Compress SET do? Will it sound worse? It stores samples compressed so more of them fit into the keyboard’s memory — on models that support it (PA700, PA1000, PA3X, PA4X). You can compress only long samples (> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 s), which saves the most. Listen afterwards; Uncompress SET reverts it. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=pcm-banks#compression ### I don’t see the Compress buttons. They appear only when the chosen model supports compression, and never for PA5X KSTs. Check the model in the memory bar. ### What are oscillators? The layers of a sound. Each oscillator plays a multisample with its own range, velocity, octave and tune. Untick oscillators in the Oscillators section to hear one layer alone. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=oscillators ### An oscillator shows a strange value like “Transpose +244”. Some values of older sound formats are not fully decoded yet and can be shown wrongly in the information panels. They are only displayed — the sound itself is not changed. ## SetManager & combining SETs ### How do I copy styles from one SET to another? Open your SET (SET A), then SetManager → Import/Merge → KORG SET / KST and double-click the other SET (SET B). Drag styles from SET B onto slots of SET A. Set Copy Options first. Then press Save. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets#korg-to-korg ### Which SET is A and which is B? SET A (left, cyan) is the SET you opened and edit — the destination. SET B (right, orange) is the one you loaded with Import/Merge — the source. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets#a-vs-b ### I copied a style but it plays with the wrong sounds. The style uses user samplers / drum kits that SET A does not have at the same numbers. Undo, switch on **Save Styles Samples & DrumKits** in Copy Options and copy it again — its sounds come along and the style is re-pointed to them. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#copy-options ### Can I copy many styles at once? Yes. Ctrl + click (or Shift + click) styles in SET B and drag the selection, or drag a whole SET B page button or bank button onto SET A. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets#groups ### I dropped a style on an occupied slot and the old one disappeared! A single style dropped from SET B replaces the style in that slot. Press Undo (Ctrl+Z) to bring the old one back. ### “No free slot left” — what now? The group did not fit in the free slots from where you dropped it. Drop the rest on another page or bank, or delete styles you don’t need. ### “Cannot drop drum kit into sampler bank”. Drum kits go into drum kit banks (USERDK…), samplers into sampler banks (User…). Switch to the right bank and drop again. ### “Not enough sample memory in SET A”. The samples you are copying don’t fit. Compress samples (PCM Banks → Compress SET), remove duplicates or unused sounds, or choose a model with more memory. ### Can I copy PA5X styles into my PA4X / PA3X SET? Yes. Open the PA5X KST as SET B and drag its styles onto your SET A: each .stg is rebuilt as a KORG style. To convert a whole KST use Convert → KORG PA700 / PA1000 / PA4X (or PA300…PA3X). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=combining-sets#kst-rules ### Can I put my old SET styles (with their samples) into a PA5X KST? Yes. Open the KST as SET A and the old SET as SET B, switch on Save Styles Samples & DrumKits and drag the styles: they become .stg and their sounds are copied into the KST. Or convert the whole SET with Convert → KORG PA5X (.KST). ### Between two KSTs I can’t paste into SET B. Is that a bug? No. With two PA5X KSTs, styles and sounds go only from SET B to SET A. ### How do I copy the pads of a style? Switch on Copy Styles Pads (KORG SET↔SET) in Copy Options and copy the style, or drag pads one by one in the PADS tab. ### After copying, the style’s STS have different sounds. With Save Styles STS off, a copied style gets a default STS. Switch it on (and confirm saving the STS samples if asked) before copying. ### How do I make a new empty SET? SetManager → Create New Set: name, model (PA300 – PA4X) and folder. It opens as SET A, ready to fill. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#btn-create-new ### How do I find sounds that no style uses? SetManager → Check Unused lists sounds that no style or performance uses. Delete the ones you don’t need (you can undo). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#btn-check-unused ### How do I find a style in a huge SET? In SetManager press Ctrl+F and type part of the name. You can search sounds, styles, performances and pads, in SET A or SET B. ### Can I copy performances? Yes, in the PERF tab: drag them from SET B, and right-click for Copy, Rename, Delete and Properties. ## Saving & undo ### How do I save my changes? Press Save in SetManager (or Ctrl+S there). The Save window lists every change; press Save changes. Until then your SET on disk is untouched. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving#save-window ### How do I undo? Press Undo in SetManager or Ctrl+Z (redo: Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z). Every copy, import, rename, delete, compression and style edit can be undone until you save. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving#undo-redo ### Is there a Ctrl+R shortcut? No. The shortcuts are Ctrl+Z (undo), Ctrl+Y / Ctrl+Shift+Z (redo) and Ctrl+S (Save window), in SetManager. ### Ctrl+Z does nothing. The shortcuts work while SetManager is on screen, outside text boxes and other windows. Click an empty area of SetManager and try again, or press the Undo button. ### I want to throw away everything I did. Open Save and press Discard changes: SET A goes back to how it is on disk. ### What happens if I close the program with unsaved changes? It asks: Save and exit, Exit without saving, or Cancel. ### Why is there no Undo for my AKX set? Medeli AKX sets are written immediately — they have no working copy. Keep a backup of your AKX set folder before big changes. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=saving#immediate ### How do I put the saved SET back on my keyboard? After Save, copy the whole `.SET` / `.KST` folder to your USB stick and load it on the keyboard as usual. ## Styles, importing & Style Properties ### Which style formats can I import into a KORG SET? KORG .STY (from any bank), PA5X .stg, Yamaha .sty (SFF), Medeli .sty, Ketron .kst and .mid files with style section markers. Right-click an empty style slot → Import Style. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=importing#import-styles ### Can I play a Yamaha style on my KORG? Yes: Import Style on an empty slot (Browse… → your .sty), or convert it in the Converter to KORG .STY / PA5X .stg. ### My .mid file is refused. A plain MIDI file needs style section markers (Main A, Intro 1, Fill In AA…) so the program knows which bars are which section. Add the markers in your DAW, or use PA SET EXPLORER MIDI files exported by the Converter. ### How do I change the sound of a track in a KORG style? Right-click the style → Properties → ReMap on the track → choose the sound → Apply. Use the User tab for your own samplers. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=style-properties#remap ### Why can’t I edit Style Properties? The style is in SET B, which opens read-only. Copy it to SET A first. ### Can I edit the notes of a KORG style? Yes, with the Event Editor: Style Properties → right-click a Chord Variation (CV1…CV6) → Event Editor. Press Save CV when done. It is a Premium feature. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=style-properties#event-editor ### How do I save one style as a file? Style Properties → Export Style: KORG .STY, Yamaha .STY, MIDI, Medeli AKX10 .STY or Ketron .kst. ### How long can a style name be? Up to 24 characters. ### How do I import a SoundFont (.sf2) as a KORG sampler? SetManager → SOUNDS → right-click an empty slot of a sampler bank → Import Sampler → choose the .sf2 (pick the preset if it has several) → Import. For drum kits use a drum kit bank → Import DrumKit. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=importing#import-samplers ### Which sound files can I import into a KORG SET? Samplers: .sf2, Medeli .voi, Yamaha .uvn and KORG .kmp (+ .ksf). Drum kits: .sf2, Medeli .kit and Yamaha .uvd. ### Can I import WAV files? Not directly. Build a SoundFont (.sf2) with your WAVs in a free sampler tool, then import the .sf2. ### What is kept when importing a sampler? Samples, zones, velocity layers, tuning, volume, pan (kits) and reverb / chorus sends. Envelopes and filter use KORG defaults. ## Converter & Convert ### What is the difference between the Converter and SetManager → Convert? The **Converter** converts one style file at a time, with full control (section map, Style Settings, Verify Fidelity). **Convert** in SetManager converts a whole SET in one go (to PA5X KST, older KORG, Medeli AKX, Yamaha or Ketron). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter#what-converter ### Which formats can the Converter write? KORG PA700/1000/PA4X (.STY), KORG PA300/600/900 (.STY), KORG PA5X (.stg), Medeli AKX10 (.sty), Yamaha (.sty), Ketron / Audya (.kst), Standard MIDI (.mid, up to 2 CVs) and PA SET EXPLORER MIDI (.mid). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter#formats ### Why does my Yamaha / Medeli conversion lose Chord Variations? Those formats store fewer variations per part (one main plus one alternative). The converter keeps the most important ones and the Warnings box tells you exactly what was reduced. ### What does Verify Fidelity tell me? It converts in memory and compares with the source: sections kept, notes kept and ranges kept. KORG ↔ PA5X conversions usually reach 100%. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter#verify ### Can I edit a style in my DAW and bring it back? Yes: convert it to PA SET EXPLORER MIDI (.mid), edit it in your DAW, import that .mid and convert back. Untouched notes give a byte-identical style. ### What is “Transcribe Guitar Mode”? KORG Guitar Mode tracks use special trigger notes that only KORG understands. Transcribing turns them into real guitar notes (voicings, strum direction, muted strokes) so Yamaha and Medeli can play them. Transcribe RX Noises also adds the guitar noises. ### “No free part for a chord-following track” — what should I choose? Medeli’s Perc channel only plays drum kits. If a style has a melodic sound on Perc, choose the recommended option (Replace with it) unless you know better; “Leave it out” drops that part. ### Where are converted files saved? In the folder you choose when you press CONVERT (Converter) or Choose folder & Convert (SetManager). SetManager conversions also write a report (.txt) there. ### When will the Sampler Converter be ready? It is in development and will arrive in a coming update. Meanwhile you can export sounds from the Sound Library and import .sf2 / .voi / .uvn / .kmp / .kit / .uvd files. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=converter#sampler-converter ### What is converted when I convert a SET to a PA5X KST? One style folder per bank (every style becomes .stg) and every sampler and drum kit rebuilt in a new PA5X sample template in the same bank and slot. GLOBAL, PERFORM, PAD and SONGBOOK are not converted. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=setmanager#btn-convert ## Medeli AKX / Zen ### What is an AKX / Zen set? The expansion that Medeli’s GrandSuite program sends to the AKX10 / AKX10S: a folder with a .GSTarget file containing voices, drum kits, pads and styles organised in packs. ### How do I put my KORG sounds and styles on a Medeli AKX? Open your KORG SET, then Import/Merge → Medeli AKX / Zen expansion (or Create AKX/Zen Set). Drag KORG styles onto a Styles pack, samplers onto a Samples pack, drum kits onto a DrumKits pack — or use Convert Set to convert everything at once. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#korg-to-akx ### 256 MB or 768 MB? Choose the memory of your AKX expansion. It is used for the memory bar so you know when the set is full. ### “AKX memory full”. The set has no room left. Remove items you don’t need, or convert fewer sounds. ### Can I add Yamaha or KORG Triton sounds to an AKX set? Yes: right-click a Samples pack → Add .voi / .uvn / .kmp files…, or a DrumKits pack → Add .kit / .uvd files…. They are converted to Medeli format. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=importing#import-akx ### Can I edit an AKX voice? Yes: double-click it. Change global settings (volume, envelope, play mode, reverb, chorus, vibrato…) and layer / zone settings, listen on the keyboard, then press Save (a backup is kept). Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#voice-props ### Can I edit AKX styles? Yes: double-click a style. Change samplers, volumes, octaves, chord rules and notes in the Tracks step, edit the Quick Settings, then Save Style. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#akx-styles ### Can I turn an AKX set into a KORG SET? Yes: SetManager → Convert → choose the Medeli AKX set → pick the KORG model, name and packs → Convert… Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=medeli-akx#akx-to-korg ### Do AKX changes need Save? No — they are written immediately. That is why a backup of the AKX folder is recommended. ### What is the convert manifest file? After Convert Set, `_convert_manifest.txt` in the AKX set folder lists everything that was converted, skipped or mapped. ## Style Players ### How do I listen to a style? In SetManager: right-click → Play ▸ → choose the section. For style files: double-click them in Resources. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=style-players#two-players ### How do I change the chord in the player? In the universal Style Player (Tracks step) choose the root and type in CHORD. The KORG Style Player plays the style as recorded. ### How do fills work in the KORG Style Player? Click Fill 1–4 or Break while playing: it starts on the next bar and returns to the variation. Clicked while stopped, it is armed and plays first. ### Can the style play on my real KORG keyboard? Yes: connect it by USB-MIDI and switch MIDI: ON in the KORG Style Player. A connected KORG keyboard plays every track with its own sounds. ### I hear nothing. Check Audio Options → Output device and Master Gain, and that Stop was not pressed. In the universal player try the other output (PC MIDI / Internal). ### Why are some tracks red in the Style Player? Those tracks use a sampler that is not in the loaded set; they play with a GS sound in the preview. Double-click the sampler to choose another one. ### Can I save the changes I make in the Style Player? Yes, with Save Style — for KORG .STY, PA5X .stg, Yamaha and Ketron files (saved in place with a backup) and for AKX styles. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=style-players#save-style ## Problems & solutions ### The sound crackles or stops. Audio Options → Output stability: Balanced or Stable, and/or a bigger Buffer Size (512). Close other heavy programs. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=settings-and-more#audio-options ### A big SET takes long to load. Big SETs (several GB) need time for the working copy and the sample index. Let it finish; the loading window shows the progress. ### My keyboard does not load the SET. Make sure you saved, copied the whole folder, and that the SET fits the model’s memory (memory bar). Check the model you chose matches the keyboard. ### A button has a padlock. It is a Premium feature and your plan is Basic. Upgrade on the Plans page or check your plan in Profile. ### I found a bug. How do I report it? Use Bug Report in the sidebar: choose where it happens, describe it and the steps to repeat it. Technical information is attached automatically. Full guide: https://pasetexplorer.com/tutorials?c=settings-and-more#bug-report ### I bought a new license. How do I use it? Profile → Change License → enter the new key. The old one stays active until the new one is verified. --- # Glossary - **.GSTarget**: The main file of a Medeli AKX/Zen set. - **.kmp / .ksf**: KORG Triton / Kronos / Nautilus multisample (.kmp) and its samples (.ksf). - **.PCG**: A KORG sound bank file (USER01.PCG, USERDK01.PCG…). - **.sf2**: SoundFont 2 — a widely supported sampler format with samples and key zones. - **.stg**: One KORG PA5X style. - **.STY**: A KORG style bank file (many styles in one file).
